    Number 16, I can tell you why the media does not educate Americans about single payer national health insurance. The media receives advertising dollars from the pharmaceutical companies and the health insurance companies, which are currently reported to be spending an average of $1.4 million dollars every day in the continuing “education” (translation: propaganda) of Americans to fear national health insurance. While Americans have been taught to fear it, other free-market countries have implemented it.

    I know I have a very pessimistic view but I believe that what it comes down to, in the U.S., is that people’s health is not as important as money. In other regions of the world, people do not understand how we Americans can allow medical bills to bankrupt our fellow Americans. And, Bob, I agree with your assessment of the media, unfortunately.

    Many (most?) of the industrialized countries that have Universal Health Care coverage are not single payer.

    I’m currently reading, “The Healing of America”, by T.R.Reid, and it appears that the French and German systems might have more effective competition with their systems than in our system. This book is really well written. It compares health care systems in several countries around the world.

    From what I see, our system is in many cases effectively a monopoly. In many cities, towns, counties, or states, there are few medical facilities to choose from. And consumers have no information with which to make an intelligent decision about which business to patronize. We do not know in advance what a given procedure will cost. The cost will be different if you do or do not have insurance. We don’t have data on successful outcome rates by those service providers. Most people don’t get to choose a health care insurance provider, either. They get what their employer picks. I’m not sure how free enterprise is really supposed to work with an effective monopoly.

    Have you all ever looked at how they measure infant mortality rates in Canada? They do not measure with premature births. The United States however does. When you factor in both of these figures Canada has a 30% higher mortality rate! Did anyone ever think to look how these statistics are measured, or was it just me?!
